Strait street, also known as Strada Stretta in Valletta has quite a seedy history. Known to have been the red light district for Sailors and ship workers visiting Malta.
The Grand Harbour, one of Malta’s only natural resources has been subject of much Maltese targeted crusades. That and our strategic position, the centre of the Mediterranean. Since Valletta (Malta’s capital city) and the Harbour’s location in Valletta it was an easy choice for a road or another to wind up becoming a bar, nightclub & red light district hotspot. Since the time of the knights this street has been frequented and has till today remained a popular watering hole.
Seedy days are over.
Nowadays Stait street is not the breeding ground for courtesans and Sailors anymore. However what remains are a bunch of bars and restaurants dotted along the kilometer long road and its peripherals.
Strait street centre for nightlife?
Indeed, is the centre of Valletta for nightlife. It is not to say that other sweet bars and cafes do not exist in Valletta, but the hub is definitely in Strait street. This however is not an area for youngsters. Strait street is for the Maltese a hang out area for the adult generation. Youngsters whilst not forbidden are encouraged to visit other areas of Malta to seek out their fellow brethren.
Top Bars to visit?
Starting off with our watering hole as the number one place to visit in Strait Street! 😉 We are Salumeria and we offer a familiar experience, family and Maltese run by two brothers Pab & Max.
We are situated on the corner of Strait Street & St.John Street at the top of Valletta, “closer” to the Triton fountain and beginning of Valletta if looking at the map. From here, more bars will dot along the road, next in line being our friends Yard 32 a famous Gin bar. Further down the road other bars such as Carcross, Streat ( a whiskey bar), then further on down towards, Tico Tico, Loop bar, Carmen Bar (claimed to be strait streets oldest bar) and ending at the bottom of the hill with the Gut which is a bunch of concept bars.
We’d love to help you out. From which touristic places are a must to visit to the traps where one should steer clear.
